Summerhall Arts: Callout for First Draft Commissions

Closing date: Sun 24 May 2026: 11:00PM

Summerhall Arts is inviting applications for two First Draft Commissions, supporting writers based in Scotland to develop a new play over an extended, self-directed period.

They will commission two writers to develop a first draft of a new stage work (up to one hour in length), with a fee of £3,228.75 per writer. This is a process-led opportunity designed to support writers to spend time with an idea — to test, explore and build a piece of work without the pressure of immediate production.

They are interested in bold, contemporary writing that engages with the world and takes risks in form, voice or content. This is an opportunity for ideas in development — they are not looking for polished scripts, but for compelling proposals and distinctive voices.

Writers will have approximately 12 months to develop their work, with light-touch, tailored support from the Summerhall Arts team. As part of the commission, writers will receive a complimentary pass to Summerhall Arts’ programmes during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and across the year, giving them space to see work, connect with artists, and situate their own practice within a broader context.

This is a standalone commission and does not guarantee future programming. However, Summerhall Arts will work in ongoing conversation with selected writers as their ideas develop, and will hold first refusal on any future presentation of the work, with credit as original commissioners.

Please read through the application guidelines on their website prior to submitting your application.

This opportunity is open to Scotland-based writers (18+) with some experience writing for live performance, who are ready to develop a new piece over an extended period. Applicants should not be in full-time education and must be able to commit to delivering a first draft by July 2027.

They welcome applications in a range of formats (written, audio or video), and encourage you to let us know if there are any access requirements that would support your application or participation by emailing imogen@summerhallarts.co.uk.
