Backstage Day

Venue: National Theatre of Scotland, Rockvilla, 125 Craighall Road, Glasgow, G4 9TL
Prices: Free

As part of Birds of Paradise’s Cue Backstage project, they are teaming up with the National Theatre of Scotland for a Backstage Day.

This is an accessible event where disabled, D/deaf and/or neurodivergent people who might be interested in working backstage will have the opportunity to meet and talk to a range of industry professionals in areas such as sound, lighting, wardrobe, designers, stage management (and more) about what working backstage is like.

It is open to anyone curious about backstage work, including those who believed it wasn’t accessible before. It will be suitable for all ages and all stages of career, whether you are just starting out, considering a career change, or facing barriers at work.

Access at the event

  • Two roaming Sign Language Interpreters
  • One roaming Sighted Guide / Personal Assistant
  • A remote live captioner for the welcome
  • A quiet space
  • Sensory Bags will be available
  • Masks and hand sanitiser will be available
  • There are accessible bathrooms within the National Theatre of Scotland.

How to get involved

The event is drop-in, but you can also book by emailing all@boptheatre.co.uk

About Cue Backstage

BOP have worked for over three decades to increase the profile of disabled performers, writers and other ‘visible’ creatives – with this project we will look at increasing access to the performing arts in Scotland for those working backstage and offstage.

Supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, BOP are excited to work with partners and the wider sector to ensure that disabled people have opportunities to develop in backstage and offstage roles, and that they learn ways to ensure that the sector moves to a culture that views disabled workers as an asset in all areas of production.

The event announced on the poster is a CUE Backstage Day at the National Theatre of Scotland on Saturday, November 15th, which is an initiative focused on creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce in the Scottish performing arts, particularly for disabled people in technical and backstage roles. The event is part of the "Cue Backstage" project led by Birds of Paradise Theatre Company, which aims to provide accessible opportunities, learning, and knowledge to develop and support disabled people for roles like stage manager, lighting, sound, and set design, promoting inclusivity within the industry.
