Clown Play is a two day clown workshop with Dirliebane Theatre Company, and in collaboration with Perth Theatre. Explore saying yes, presence, connection and playfulness.
This clown workshop is open to performers, artists and workshop facilitators as part of their ongoing personal and/or professional development and will explore the clown elements of:
– saying yes
– connection
– presence
– playfulness
– improvisation
The workshops will be led by the Artistic Directors of Dirliebane Theatre Company, Fiona Ferrier and Rachel Colles. They are professional character clowns and have been devising and performing clown theatre with Dirliebane Theatre Company since 2016. They are also Clowndoctors and Elderflowers with Hearts & Minds, were previously the Artistic Leads, training a new cohort of clowndoctors in 2023. Fiona and Rachel are passionate about clowning, working in duos and using clown to establish strong connections with audiences.
Dirliebane Theatre Company creates clown theatre performances for children, young people and their families, using character clowning that creates naïve, optimistic, light and fun characters. Since 2016 Dirliebane has toured schools and venues, researched Virtual Reality theatre for children and young people and created clown films during Covid. Dirliebane will be touring clown theatre performance BOUNCE in March, a show for 5-10 year olds in BSL and English. Dirliebane will be touring Laaaunch!, a clown show for babies under 12 months created in collaboration with Starcatcher, in Autumn 2025.

Dirliebane acknowledges the current lack of diversity within clowning in Scotland and they particularly welcome applications from performers who identify as being of the global majority, disabled, neurodivergent, or any combination of these. They are happy to facilitate access needs for participants and encourage applicants to bring them to their attention so that they can support them to the best of their abilities. They can provide a BSL interpreter at the workshop if requested. They will reserve two places for diverse groups.
