Creative Workshop on Arts Management Education

Venue: Creative Scotland, Waverley Gate, Edinburgh
Prices: Free

Hosted by Caitlin McKinnon, PhD Candidate at Queen Margaret University and the University of Stirling,
on 7 May 2024, 2pm – 4pm, at Creative Scotland’s Waverley Gate Offices in Edinburgh.

Background:
Caitlin Mckinnon is conducting a research project aimed at exploring the nuances of Arts Management Education in Scotland. The project seeks to better understand how arts management is taught and learned here in Scotland, while considering the possible tensions of professionalisation and standardisation within arts management practice. This includes seeking to understand the extent and level of provision of Arts Management courses available in Scotland, including their content and prevalent discourses, and how these have evolved, as well as the informal ways in which arts managers develop their skills and grow their careers.

Workshop Objective:
To gather insights from practitioners and freelancers in the arts admin/management community through a Creative Workshop.

What to expect:
This workshop is designed for individuals working in the administration, management, or development of arts or cultural projects or organisations, broadly referred to as “Arts Managers.” In the workshop, participants will create zines to explore various topics around the arts management profession.

What is a zine?:
A zine is a homemade publication. There are no set-in-stone rules for making zines. A zine can be about anything you’re interested in. They can contain poetry, narrative, drawings, comics, collage and more. At its roots, “self-publishing” is the key feature of what makes a zine a zine, not a magazine. It is noncommercial and non “professional”.

Hosted by Caitlin McKinnon, PhD Candidate at Queen Margaret University and the University of Stirling
2pm – 2.20pm – Welcome and research explanation
2.20pm -2.30pm – Zine-making tutorial
2.30pm – 3.50pm – Zine creation and discussion
3.50pm – 4pm – Concluding thoughts

As this workshop is part of Caitlin’s research, discussion and recorded conversations will be part of the workshop. This will be done with consent from participants. Information on the research will be provided ahead of the event.
