Global Majority Creative Social

Venue: Common Ground, Centre for Contemporary Arts, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G2 3JD
Prices: Free

The Global Majority Arts Workers Social is a chance for artists & arts workers from the Global Majority in Scotland to meet up and connect.

It’s an agenda-free gathering – nothing is expected of you beyond showing up. The objective is to occupy a shared space, but how you use that space is up to you. Maybe you’re looking to connect with your peers, maybe you want to network and shout about an idea or project you’ve got going on, or maybe you just fancy a pint with the pals you’ve come with in a room filled with other people from the Global Majority – there are no expectations, just room.

This is a pilot project which will evolve according to the interests and needs of those who attend. In the first instance, the priority is to be accessible and safe. They’re kicking off at Common Ground at the CCA in Glasgow on Thu 21 September 2023 from 7pm – 10pm, but the plan is for the Global Majority Arts Workers Social to pop up in different locations throughout Scotland. For those who require support to attend – whether that’s help with the cost of travel, an interpreter, or anything else – they have limited funds available on a first-come, no-questions-asked basis.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
This social is specifically for 18+ artists and arts workers from the Global Majority. The term ‘Global Majority’, coined by Rosemary Campbell-Stephens MBE, refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/or have been racialized as ‘ethnic minorities’. The purpose of the social is to make space for people to come together and be.

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
Global Majority Arts Workers Social is organised by Ica Headlam (We Are Here Scotland), Matthew Hickman (Culture Collective), and Harry Mould (Federation of Scottish Theatre).

ACCESS
They will do our utmost to ensure these socials are as accessible and safe as possible. They will not host events in spaces that restrict physical access, and we aim to work with suitable venues that are Global Majority-owned, whenever able. BSL interpreters can be provided, and they welcome support workers regardless of whether they identify as being from the Global Majority. There is a travel stipend available to those who would otherwise not be able to attend due to cost of transport or concern for personal safety. The first event will take place in the evening, in a venue serving alcohol, but as the project continues they aim to occasionally host gatherings during the day and in sober spaces.
