Join YTAS and Young Minds for an intensive and practical workshop, focusing on Mental Health support for young people.
This course, part of our Youth Theatre for Everyone strand of training, explores practical ways to support children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing, from everyday interactions to crisis support. It encourages adults working with young people to reflect on their current practice and develop skills to enhance their relationships. The Practical Approaches course is 5 and ½ hours long including breaks, with plenty of practical resources to take away. We are hosting this course online to allow for more practitioners from youth theatres across Scotland to take part.
Content warning: Please note that this practical skills course includes looking at interactions with young people who are in crisis and distress, so will include some discussions around the areas of self-harm and suicide.
During the course you will:
- Understand the importance of trusted adult relationships in supporting young people’s mental health
- Share and develop best practice, including tools to use with young people and where to look for sources of support
- Explore practical self-care strategies that help to sustain our role as a trusted adult
- Explore practical ideas to help embed mental health support in our work with young people.
The YTAS sector training programme is supported by funding from the Gannochy Trust and Creative Scotland.
Who is it for?
Managers: For those of you who are running everything from behind the scenes. Training that is for ‘managers’ may include opportunities for other office-based staff.
Practitioners: For those on the front line of creative delivery. Training that is for ‘practitioners’ is for anyone who engages directly with young people in the creative process.
Freelancers: For those of you who are braving it on your own. Training for ‘freelancers’ will be spaces designed to investigate the unique challenges that come from working contractually for multiple organisations.
About the Trainer
This training will be delivered by the brilliant trainers at Young Minds.
Young Minds’ methodology takes a unique approach in placing young people and their lived experience at the heart of service design and delivery. Their evidence-based training and consultancy builds on the experiences of professionals, and the young people they work with, to meet their identified needs and outcomes, whilst increasing their confidence in looking out for, and supporting, mental health issues. Each year they deliver training to over 10,000 professionals, and their expert trainers give participants the practical skills to support the young people they work with.

We at YTAS are aware of the current financial struggles that the sector is facing. We would like to remind you that bursaries are available to any YTAS Member who requires financial support in order to attend one of our training courses, and will cover any fees associated with the training.
