This webinar on 8 December 2023 will provide an introduction or refresher on the topic of governance. The event is free, online (via Zoom) and the schedule is 12 noon – 1pm for presentations, plus 30 minutes for questions.
How are decisions made in your theatre organisation, and who is held accountable for them? How well does your organisation deliver its objectives and how is its performance optimised?
Understanding what good governance is and how to practice it helps answer these questions. Governance is a systemic approach rather than a single activity or function, and when it’s done well it supports the organisation and its employees. It helps manage risk and major challenges like economic shortfalls or government policy changes, and ensures your organisation is operating legally, ethically, sustainably, and successfully.
In this first year of the Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities project, nine Theatres at Risk groups participated in group training on governance delivered by expert facilitator and consultant, Laura Norris. During this webinar Laura will talk about some of the governance topics covered during the training, such as trustee recruitment.
Training participants Samantha Kelly and Christopher Oatway, trustees of Victoria Theatre in Salford, Greater Manchester will share how their views about governance have changed as a result of the training and how they’re approaching equality, diversity and inclusion.
Siân Eagar, Theatres at Risk Advisor and Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities Programme Manager will provide an overview of governance principles such as leadership, decision-making and risk. Siân will offer practical tools to help focus your governance practice on fulfilling your organisation’s purpose and vision.
The webinar will provide an introduction to governance and will also serve as a refresher for those who are familiar with it. It will be suitable for trustees, HR professionals, newly appointed chief executives, campaign groups and anyone in a leadership role in a not-for-profit organisation.
