Catherine Wheels: Make Space

Closing date: Thu 31 Jul 2025: 5pm

Catherine Wheels began Make Space in 2020, a project which offered funding for artists to explore
what work for young audiences might look like during and after the pandemic. They ran a second
Make Space over 2021-22. Over the two projects they worked with 11 artists on a wide-ranging
variety of successful projects and they want to continue this way of supporting independent artists
and freelancers within the sector; so we are pleased to announce that we will run a third Make
Space this year.

This year Make Space will have a focus on projects made for, or with, young people in schools.
Working with a school could have a variety of approaches eg children may play a central role in your
project, they may be involved in developing ideas with you, you may wish to connect to the wider
school staff and wider community or perhaps it is the physical environment that interests you. They
are open to all ideas and encourage experimentation to what work in a school may be.

For this project you will be connected to a school in East Lothian. You may not have worked in a
school before, or have much experience working with children; the Catherine Wheels team will
support you with this.

They are offering funding for two or three artists/collectives. You will not be expected to end the
project with a finished idea, this is about having time to think about what you want to create, to
spend time on an idea you’ve had for a while, or a new one, and to explore ideas for how and where
you would want to present the work to young audiences.
