Overview:
PYT Mainstage is a yearly project where young cast members work with a professional creative team culminating in performances on our Perth Theatre main stage. This year we are producing Alice by Laura Wade, a dark and funny modernized reimagining of the classic Lewis Carroll story.

Purpose:
To support the Director with the creative vision and staging, rehearsal process, and delivery of a high-quality mainstage theatre production involving young people aged 14–19. The Assistant Director will balance artistic excellence with a supportive, inclusive approach to youth development, ensuring participants gain skills, confidence, and a meaningful performance experience. The Assistant Director will also be expected to support the Learning & Engagement team with pastoral care of the young people when required.

Responsibilities:
Support the director in all aspects of the Perth Youth Theatre Mainstage Production Alice by Laura Wade. 
Collaborate with the Creative Team to support the director’s overall vision of the show 
To help cast the production with the Director and Head of Learning & Engagement 
Attend and support all rehearsals at Perth Theatre, taking notes and providing clear feedback
Deputising in the Director’s absence
Lead warm-ups; games and drama exercises with young people to help their development
Work with individuals and small groups to develop scenes and performances
Provide encouragement, guidance and pastoral support when needed
Support a safe, inclusive and disciplined rehearsal environment
Manage behaviour effectively; maintaining clear boundaries and expectations
To liaise with stage management and Learning & Engagement team about materials and production requirements
To consider the environmental impact of design and delivery of the project and to minimise any negative impact on the environment.  
To attend Production Meetings.  
To communicate any issues arising with the Learning & Engagement team;
Comply with PTCH’s Child Protection policy and organisational procedures;

What They’re Looking For

Essential:
Strong ability of working with children & young people in a rehearsal & performance environment
At least two years’ professional experience working as a Director in theatre. This could include directing your own productions, youth theatre work, working with drama schools/colleges and other similar work.
