Perth Youth Theatre (PYT) Mainstage is a yearly project where young cast members work with a professional creative team culminating in performances on our Perth Theatre main stage.
This year we are producing Alice’ by Laura Wade, a dark and funny modernised re-imagining of the classic Lewis Carroll story.
Purpose:
To lead the creative vision, rehearsal process, and delivery of a high-quality mainstage theatre production involving young people aged 14–19. The Director will balance artistic excellence with a supportive, inclusive approach to youth development, ensuring participants gain skills, confidence, and a meaningful performance experience.
Responsibilities:
Oversee all aspects of the Perth Youth Theatre Mainstage Production Alice by Laura Wade.
Collaborate with the Creative Team to develop the overall vision of the show
To help cast the production with Head of Learning & Engagement and Assistant Director
To attend and lead all rehearsals at Perth Theatre.
To create rehearsal schedules for all rehearsals
To direct a group of young people aged 14 – 19 in the play Alice by Laura Wade.
To ensure that the young people are supported and encouraged during the rehearsal and production process
To manage the themes and issues of the play sensitively with a young cast
Create a safe, inclusive and disciplined rehearsal environment
Manage behaviour effectively; maintaining clear boundaries and expectations
To consider the environmental impact of design and delivery of the project and to minimise any negative impact on the environment.
To liaise with stage management and Learning & Engagement team about materials and production requirements.
To attend Production Meetings
To communicate any issues arising with the Learning & Engagement team;
Comply with PTCH’s Child Protection policy and organisational procedures;
Any other responsibilities to meet the needs of the production
What They’re Looking For
Essential:
Strong ability of working with children & young people in a rehearsal & performance environment
At least two year’s professional experience working as a Director or an Associate Director
Strong ability to inspire and engage young people aged 14-19
Strong ability to adapt ways of working
Excellent leadership skills
Excellent organisational skills
Excellent creative problem-solving skills
Strong ability to liaise with people at all levels of the organisation
Experience in running Tech rehearsals and communicating needs to the creative team effectively and efficiently.
