Edinburgh Youth Theatre: Freelance Drama Leader

Edinburgh Youth Theatre (EYT) is seeking passionate and experienced leaders to join their team. They are opening new weekly classes in Dalry and expanding our team to deliver these as well as our existing Portobello classes. If you are creative, enthusiastic, and have a strong understanding of drama in a youth theatre setting, working with a wide range of children including those who are neurodivergent, disabled and learning disabled, they want to hear from you.

Freelance hours to be set between 4.30pm-6.30pm on Thursdays and 1pm-6.30pm on Fridays during term time at Bellfield Hub, 16b Bellfield Street, Portobello, EH15 2BP or St Martin’s Community Centre, 232 Dalry Road, Dalry EH11 2JG.

Start: 9 January
Rate: £30ph
Initial four week trial period

Key Responsibilities:
– Drama Curriculum: Develop a tailored drama curriculum that caters to the unique needs and abilities of children while fostering creativity and self-confidence. Direct drama performances, including script selection, casting and overseeing rehearsals. Be able to provide a well rounded theatre curriculum.

– Coordinate technical aspects of Performance: such as lighting, sound, and set design
– Engagement and Inclusion: Create a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and can participate actively in drama activities.
– Behaviour Management: Implement effective strategies to manage behaviour that challenges whilst maintaining a structured and positive class atmosphere.
– Individualised Support: Adapt teaching methods to accommodate the diverse learning styles of a neurodiverse youth theatre class.
– Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with EYT team, management and children’s parents and or carers to provide updates on children’s progress and any concerns.
– Team Collaboration: Collaborate with other staff members to ensure a holistic approach to children’s well-being and development.
– Professional Development: Be willing to take part in training to further your professional development

Essential requirements from you:
– Previous experience working with children who are neurodivergent in youth theatre. No less than 2 years experience at leader level.
– Strong understanding of childhood development.
– Patience, empathy, and excellent communication skills.
– Creative and adaptable teaching techniques.
– Ability to electronically take class registers.

Non essential requirements from you:
– Bachelor’s degree or HND in drama, education, or related field.
– First Aid certificate.
